How to
There are several ways to proceed
to making a sand sculpture !
To make a sand sculpture you need all sorts of equipment such as buckets,
brushes, shovels etc...here is a detailed list of what we can use:
Buckets, spatula or other carving tool and of course a paint brush.
![]() Find the emplacement... look around to see if the sculpture will be in the
way of anything. (concert, promo, etc...) Although if you want to make things easier, get closer to the waters edge. Take a shovel or bucket, then from the center of where the sculpture will be, push away any dry sands in a circular/spiral movement, until you've reached the layer of wet sand. Now it is time to soak the whole surroundingarea starting from the center. (this may vary for structure size)make sure you've soaked everything around... including team-mates if desired!
![]() Its time to start building up! Again from the center, start building up a pile of wet sand that you will be mixing as the mound gets bigger and bigger. It is very important that all the sand and water are well mixed.
As your getting bigger and bigger, always add water. As you are comming to a desiredsize continue by starting imagining the shape so you can concentrate more sand in the places you will be molding. Molding gets a little more skillful. With your hands, tap the pile concentrating on the shapes of the sculpture While tapping and making sure you have a smooth surface, pour water and let sit for a while.
![]() Preparing to carve. With a larger utensil (spatula, small shovel) cut out any large amount of un-desired sand. Now you are ready to carve ! Always starting from the very top point of the sculpture, start carving out the details.
As you're carving, use your brush or blowing tool to push away any scraps or undesired sand. This is why it is important to start at the top. Once the sculpture is all finished, with a rake or just your fingers, even out the sand around the sculpture to make it look even, and clean. Every little while, depending how fast the sand dries, you must spray the sculpture so it doesnt dry up and fall apart. This is very important! Touch ups...
![]() Every sculpture can use more and more detailing becoming more and more beutiful. a whole evolution.
This should be carved very lightly, and brushed off with the blowing tool.
